![]() ![]() They walked right on by, never having noticed that sign. Could it be the main attraction? Do I hang back a while and let the raucous family move on so I can capture my video? And as I tried to tune out the noise, I saw what looked to be a sign with a camera icon on it in the distance. And as young boys often do, they were misbehaving and annoying the parents. Just walk towards the back and the rest will become clear to the observant adventurer.Īs I hiked in, a few feet in front me was a family of four. You'll often see folks perched on top of those boulders. It occupies a circular area, with large, round sandstone boulders towards the back. The region that Rainbow Vista occupies is not too large. Which way to this "adventure in color"? Well, I think part of the fun is exploring and figuring it out. Just hundreds of footsteps from previous visitors left in the sand, weaving in between thousands of shrubs in every conceivable direction. And as is also not uncommon in this park, there didn't seem to be a clearly marked trail. Rusty red sand and rocks, dotted with pale green and grey shrubs. As you walk into the area dubbed "Rainbow Vista", while beautiful, it looks like so much of the rest of this state park. The park map sure didn't say anything specific. The landscape is so striking that you'll likely tolerate a bit of grit between your toes until you get back to your vehicle.Īnd, as for the "adventure in color", not sure what that means, or where to look. Dinosaur sand has a knack for getting in every nook and cranny!īut, it doesn't really matter too much though. Wear hiking boots, or some other kind of footwear that keeps the sand out. And on my first visit here, I still hadn't learned the lesson yet. Just like almost everywhere else at Valley of Fire State park. Well hot dang! I'm sold!Īnd that dinosaur sand. It says that you'll be walking through "sand deposited during the time when dinosaurs walked the earth". It says that you are "looking across 150 million years of time". There are even Native American rock carvings at the “Atlatl Rock”.As you embark on a tour of Rainbow Vista, you'll be greeted by a sign that promises an "Adventure in Color". You cant miss it as the road through the park is passing these stones. Basically it’s seven big rocks lined up close to each other. You guessed right! It’s another rock formation :). It is only a few meters from the parking lot and is also an interesting photo spot. We’ve seen many elephant rock formations on our trip but I would say that this one is the most elephant looking one. :DĪ well-known sandstone formation in Valley of Fire besides the Fire Wave is the elephant rock. The trail itself is easy and short and we could even walk it barefooted. At the end of the short trail you have a nice few over the red sandstone canyon. The green bushes and a blue sky creates high contrast. The sandstone along the way, the sand you walk on, everything is red and orange. On this trail you get to now why it is called the valley of FIRE. ![]() This was my favorite trail, so don’t miss it! The colorful landscape against the blue sky makes a wonderful picture. We were lucky to see two of them that day ! The Hike itself is short but leads you along colorful stone formations and through a short slot canyon. When you are lucky you can also meet some desert tortoises on your way as they are active at night and therefore are mostly seen in the morning or evening. When you come here in summer I would recommend starting your day early as it is cooler in the morning. Come here in the evening for sunset for the best light! You also have good views of nice sandstone formations and wonderful desert landscape along the way. But Valley of Fire has its own Wave! Just a bit smaller than the famous one, but it is still really awesome! A short trail from the parking lot at Mouse Tank’s Road leads to the Fire Wave. And as some may also now it isn’t that easy to get a permit for being allowed to hike to “The Wave”. Most of you will know “The Wave” rock formation in Vermilion Cliffs National Park. The landscape looks as if an artist has gone wild, the colors cover pink over purple, red, orange, and yellow and in some parts even turquoise! Adding to that there are two campgrounds which are quite nice! Now let’s see where to go in Valley of Fire to take the best pictures. It’s just a one hour drive from Las Vegas, so you can go there as a day trip if you are in Las Vegas. This was by far our most favorite park on the trip. ![]()
